Cybex Treadmills
Cybex is a powerful name in the industry, with a strong reputation when it comes to building and delivering quality fitness equipment for consumer and commercial use. The company was created in the late 60’s, in Ronkonkoma, NY, under the name “The Cybex Ergometer Company”. A few years later, in 1995, Lumex bought the company and changed its name to Cybex.
They started to make treadmills in 1997, when Cybex International merged with Trotter, Inc. With the acquisition of Tectrix they expanded to bikes and steppers.
Their latest (and most popular product) is the Arc Trainer. They also produce and sell cross trainers, strength equipment and rehabilitation equipment for commercial use.
Currently, they build their products in the U.S. and sell them in more than 90 countries.
Reviews:
Which Cybex Treadmill Should You Choose?
Cybex Research Institute’s mission is to create products that are 100% compatible with the human body. That is why Cybex treadmills have always appealed to us and needless to say we were extremely excited to have the chance to review some of their products for the website.
We know the price is prohibitive and very few can afford to choose a Cybex for the home gym. Even so, we believe that if it weren’t for the high price, any choice from the Cybex catalog would make the perfect solution.
The current lineup consists of the 525T, 625T, 770T, 790T and R Series.
The 525T has speeds up to 12.4 mph, incline up to 15%, a 60″ x 20″ running area, max user weight of 350 lbs. and 9 built in programs with 10 levels each.
The 625T improves upon the base model with a wider deck, 60″ x 22″, a higher max weight capacity of 400 lbs. and additional built in workouts.
The 770T has all of the features of the 625T with a 4.3″ touch screen display and even more built in workouts.
The 790T gives you up to 15.6 mph speed and incline up to 20%, on top of the touch screen and everything else that you get on the 770T.
The top of the line R Series is more of a commercial series with an 8HP motor along with other advanced features and capabilities.
All of the Cybex treadmills are great, so it really just comes down to budget. The least expensive model is the 525T, which will run you around $5,800 with the standard console. The price goes up from there, with the higher end 790T starting at $9,100.
For the most serious runners, we would definitely recommend the 790T. Everyone else will be just fine with any of the other Cybex treadmills in the series.
What are the main strengths?
If you buy a Cybex treadmill, you’re spending the money because you want to be 100% sure you’re getting a rock-solid piece of equipment that will last a lifetime. Based on the feedback we’ve received from owners, when used properly, they can last for a minimum of 10 years without requiring any particular maintenance work. Even if you put them through 5-6 hours of intense workouts daily, these machines will not break.
Cybex has a patented solution for cushioning, also known as IS3 technology. This system guarantees that the treadmill’s biomechanics align correctly with the runner’s stride, ensuring a comfortable and injury free running session.
Cybex treadmills have the strongest motors we’ve had the chance to test (maximum option is 6 HP). This is more than enough to keep up with all the workout options included in the console, but also with any customized workout you desire to test.
It’s important to be aware that each workout included in their consoles is designed at the institute by Cybex Master Trainers. Once added to the console, the workouts control the treadmill’s settings automatically according to the personal information you add at the beginning of your routine. The number of workouts included increase as you move up in the linuep. They have a preset workout package for military fitness tests, which only top brands offer.
Are there any drawbacks to a Cybex treadmill?
Personally, we believe Cybex treadmills are a little overpriced. We can assume that keeping the production facility in the United States costs more than outsourcing to other countries, as other brands do. Even so, they are one of the most expensive brands and the price makes their equipment prohibitive for home use.
Also, the entertainment monitors aren’t necessary, so if you enjoy watching TV while you’re working out, having a TV in front of you is more than enough. Cybex must continue to improve the interactive features delivered with their consoles. Their competitors already offer more attractive alternatives at better prices.
