The ProForm Performance 400C is yet another entry-level treadmill from the popular brand that comes with a price tag which puts it within the reach of even those on a small budget. The machine has all the basic features that you would expect to see in a budget treadmill and packs a few surprises like incline training and an innovative cushioning system.
Making affordable treadmills is not an easy task. You have to design the machine in such a way that it meets the fitness needs of your target customer base while keeping the price at an affordable range. ProForm is one of the few brands that have mastered the difficult task of making decent quality, budget-friendly treadmills.

Pros
Large Collection of Workout Programs
The Performance 400C comes preloaded with 18 workout programs, which are designed by professional fitness trainers. It is a good collection of programs for an entry-level treadmill. Every time you choose a program, the machine adjusts its incline and speed settings automatically.
Incline Training
It is very rare to find treadmills with an incline training option in this price range. The 400C inclines up to 10%, which is steep enough for beginners and casual users. Incline training improves your cardio, stimulates the muscles in your lower body, and helps you burn off calories at a faster rate.
Cushioning System
The machine features ProShox cushioning, which employs pressure-responsive shock absorbers to reduce impact to the extent possible. As a result, the surface is very comfortable to jog on and places very little stress on your joints.
Heart Rate Training
The built-in sensors in the handlebars track your heart rate while you work out. This technology allows you to stay in the optimal heart rate zone to get better, faster results.
LED Display
The multi-window LED display allows you to track your progress by showing you all the stats you need – speed, mileage, time, calories burned, and heart rate.
Additional Features
There is a workout fan, which is a common feature in most ProForm treadmills. The built-in sound system allows you to plug your music player and listen to your favorite songs. Also, the machine requires very little storage space thanks to the folding mechanism which allows you to fold the deck up vertically.
Cons
Motor
The ProForm Performance 400C has a 2.5 CHP motor, which is fine for walking and jogging. It is, however, not built to support heavy running. If you’re a more serious runner you might want to opt for one of their Sport or Pro series models, which offer much more powerful motors.
Tread Belt
The 400C has a 55″ track, which is pretty standard for a treadmill in this price range. The running surface, however, may not be sufficient for taller people. Again, if you are on the taller side, you might want to opt for at least the Performance 600C which has a 60″ long belt.
Conclusion
The ProForm Performance 400C is a reliable and affordable treadmill. For an entry-level treadmill, the machine has a decent amount of built-in workout programs and several impressive features like incline training and heart rate monitoring.
The 2.5 CHP motor and 55″ running track indicate that the machine is ideal for light to moderate use. For less than $600, this is pretty much the best deal you can get as there is no other machine in this price range that offers more value for your money.
If you are a runner, it is advisable to spend a few hundred dollars more and get a machine with a stronger motor and a longer running track – like the ProForm Sport 9.0 S.
